PERFORMANCE CLINICS
The Commission has sponsored performance clinics on techniques of jazz performance on instruments crucial to authentic New Orleans jazz, such as clarinet and trombone. These clinics, presented in local public schools, give today’s music students an opportunity to explore their rich musical heritage.

   HISTORIC RECORDING
In April, 2000, with the City of Mandeville, New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park, and GHB Foundation, the Commission sponsored a live recording session at the Dew Drop Dance Hall in Mandeville, the most pristine surviving classic country dance hall, built in 1895.  The musicians were Barry Martyn, Wendell Eugene, Greg Stafford, Michael White, Gerald Adams, and Bill Huntington.  Recorded in front of an enthusiastic audience of jazz fans, the session has been released on both CD and videotape.

PRESERVATION PROJECTS
Working with the Preservation Resource Center, the Vieux Carre Commission and the Historic District Landmark Commission, the Jazz Commission has worked to help identify, protect, and preserve buildings with links to jazz history, buildings like the homes of such musicians as Buddy Bolden, Kid Ory, Emmet Hardy, Jack Laine and Jelly Roll Morton, or the Golden Gate Lodge in Algiers, a dance hall that dates to the 1920s, and the Halfway House.

NEW ORLEANS JAZZ & HERITAGE FESTIVAL
The New Orleans Jazz Commission supports the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park’s sponsorship of a Children’s Tent at the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

SUPPORT OF LOCAL ARCHIVES

New Orleans is home to several major archives of historic materials related to jazz, the William Ransom Hogan Jazz Archive at Tulane University, the New Orleans Jazz Club Collection at the Louisiana State Museum, and the William Russell Collection at the Historic New Orleans Collection. The New Orleans Jazz Commission supports the activities of both institutions, supplying materials and support to copy rare reel-to-reel tape recordings threatened by age.
